Is that what they call a formatting error in the online resume world? It means the recruiter or hiring manager noticed that you ignored formatting in your resume. The worst mistake of all is for a candidate to overlook the importance of employing proper formats in a resume. You must know the difference between the standard formats and non-standard formats. Not only that, you must know how to format your resume according to the type of job you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a medical position, then you must format your resume as you would a regular job application. In short, you have to take the time to learn what are the mistakes in writing resume. You can do this yourself through practice. Or you can hire someone to help you with this job.Resume writing is a skill that everyone can use. You just need to understand the importance of formatting. And then, you just need to learn how to format a resume for the specific job you are applying for.Going back to the point, what are the mistakes in writing resume? Well, for one thing, I think that it is a lot easier to remember a series of five facts about someone rather than a list of their skills and qualifications. The Skilled Labor Shortage 2018
College, Career, Life Career and life planning resources for college students, current grads, and profession-changers. Primary Menu The Skilled Labor Shortage 2018 Andrea Today faculty is viewed as the only path to success. However, the 4 yr diploma is often overrated and pointless for profession success. Those working in the skilled trades get pleasure from good salaries without having a school diploma. And there is greater need than ever, with a scarcity of talent being reported in the expert trades. We spoke to an government from theNational Kitchen and Bath Associationabout the expert trades scarcity and tips on how to get skilled in these professions. Which expert trades are most in demand? Skilled-trade jobs proceed to be probably the most troublesome to fill in the United States. American builders, as an example, report shortages amongst all positions â" carpenters, masons, concrete employees, roofers, plumbers, painters, electricians, etc. According to NKBA members responding to the Associationâs 2018 Workforce Development Study, NKBA members report that probably the most difficult expert-trades positions to fill or find subcontract ors for in the kitchen and bath trade are installers (58%), carpenters (fifty three%), electricians (33%) and plumbers/HVAC contractors (32%). How can one become educated for these professions? There are a variety of ways that young adults can receive the coaching wanted to pursue a profession in the building trades. In response to the rising need for skilled tradespeople, an increasing number of excessive colleges now provide traditional vocational programs or pathway packages aimed toward providing their college students with the talents and hand-on training they need for the roles obtainable today and people of the future. Traditional commerce colleges provide training for classic disciplines â" development, plumbing, electrical work, and so forth. â" and options for taking certification and licensing tests. Additionally, some faculties now supply degrees or certifications in construction administration. Trade unions are additionally an excellent place to inquire about training for his or her explicit specialty, as well as look for internships and apprenticeships. Both small and huge firms within the U.S. building industry acknowledge the value of offering training and/or apprenticeship and intern packages. These packages often present training in the specific areas these corporations wish to fill and infrequently lead to everlasting positions. The National Kitchen & Bath Association, in live performance with NAHB, NARI, the National Housing Endowment and Scranton Gillette Communications, have banned together to create and assist the Skilled Labor Fund. This business-wide effort raises funds to handle the shortage of skilled labor coming into the residential construction market and to deliver labor training to local markets. The Skilled Labor Fund offers scholarships and pathways for people exploring careers in the skilled trades. In fall 2018, NKBA launched its Jobs portal on its web site, nkba.org, on which members may list positions by class, area, abi lity level and different parameters. The portal is searchable by the general public, however solely members could submit positions. What do you assume has caused this scarcity in the expert trades? Todayâs skilled trades shortage can be attributed to a few primary factors: ⢠Many development staff lost their jobs in the course of the Great Recession and never returned; ⢠The American development workforce is aging out. For each five staff retiring or in any other case leaving the business, only one is getting into; ⢠There is a major lack of younger expertise pursuing careers in the constructing/remodeling industry. (This could be attributed to several causes cited below.) To quantify the necessity, 2 million jobs within the construction fields are anticipated to open up by way of 2020. Given the dearth of people getting into the industry, the current scarcity of building labor is simply going to proceed to develop. What are the pros and cons of working in the skilled trades? When surveyed about their attitudes toward pursuing a profession in the building trades, the top purpose younger adults cite for not wanting to pursue a profession in these fields is they need a much less bodily demanding job. Many of their other reasons, nonetheless, are based on incorrect perceptions. For instance, some consider that development positions do not pay properly, and that these jobs are not very tech-oriented (that is, they donât require using computer systems or other tech units). In actuality, these ob jections couldnât be farther from the reality. According to NKBA members responding to the Associationâs Workforce Development Study, there are numerous appealing benefits to a skilled trades career. The prime five being good earnings potential; the ability to start out earning money ahead of a university graduate; steady work; an abundance of jobs to be stuffed, and the potential to own their own business. Great!Time to celebrate! After my subsequent book came out, The In-Between, it didn't work out quite as well as my initial two books.I recollect sitting on my back patio, messaging a tutor of mine, saying how let down I felt, anticipating that him should sympathize with me. This is what he said:There was when where you are sitting currently appeared to be far off. Cheer, old buddy. Rejoice!Look. I don't think a lot about anything. It wasnt your run of the mill rust red, consumed mud block. Rather, it was made to a great extent of mushroom mycelium, developed on horticultural waste, delivered by an organization call Ecovative. Benjamin needed to talk about what may be finished with such a block. Basic designers work with draftsmen a great deal; regularly we see totally insane thoughts, says Matthew Clark, who, with Shaina Saporta, was one of the two auxiliary specialists Benjamin was visiting at Arup, NY. Be that as it may, this was presumably one of the most insane. Benjamin was wanting to make something for the Museum of Modern Arts Young Architects Program, a challenge whose rules put an accentuation on maintainability and recyclability. Ecovative behaviors examination and experimentation to create altered materials for different applications. Picture: Ecovative Investigating New Materials Normally auxiliary designers fabricate things of proven materials, to a great extent cement and steel, whose properties are notable. Presently they had two undertakings in one. One was typical: What do we construct and how would we manufacture it, says Clark. The other was find about this material, how solid is it, and how firm it is. That is a great deal of fun. It isn't so much that regularly in auxiliary designing that you get the opportunity to investigate a totally new material. To start the investigation, the designers played out a harsh pressure test: They remained on the block. It endure the trial, permitting them to play out some harsh figurings about abilities. In an opposition, you need the section to be energizing, however theres no an ideal opportunity to do the science, to know without a doubt in the event that it will work, says Clark. So you remain on a block. On the off chance that you win the opposition, you have a decent begin to feel free to investigate. As the block had restricted solidness, Clark, Saporta, and Benjamin started to investigate bended structures, cones, and chambers, for the additional soundness they advertised. The twofold bend they thought of, named Hy-Fi, offered greatest quality with a firm, wide base impervious to wind loads, and a taking off proclamation that could be seen from inside and a remote place. When MoMA declared that the group had won the challenge, the genuine investigation started. Clark and Saporta began working with Ecovative to make the stiffest mushroom block conceivable. Ecovatives building group plans and creates custom hardware for delivering new materials. Picture: Ecovative Making Mushroom Bricks Making the blocks is sufficiently straightforward. Blend some mushroom spores in with ranch squander, pot it, and let it develop. At that point remove the blocks from the molds and prepare to execute the mushrooms. The procedure gave the Arup group basically two factors: the kind of rural burn through utilized and the time that the mushrooms were permitted to develop. They tried six cycles with load tests at Columbia University, wind tests at BMT Fluid Mechanics, and maturing tests at Advanced Metal Coatings. For most extreme firmness they chose corn stalks for squander material and a 10-day development period. By letting them develop longer we get a greater amount of the mycelium, and the blocks have less void worth, says Saporta. The conclusive outcome is a mushroom block that is multiple times milder than steel, multiple times less firm than a normal lodging block, yet fit for holding what might be compared to 50 vehicles. The possibility of a strong yet biodegradable block is something of a paradoxical expression. Climate sealing them without obliterating their fundamental compostability was a contention from the beginning. Fixing every block in polyurethane would have tackled the issue totally yet would have gone against the idea just as the standards. Rather, they utilized normal oil entered into the blocks. They tried the covered blocks in a residential shower, says Clark, and discovered they just increased a couple of rate purposes of mass. They dont go extremely spongy and adaptable, he says. Those couple of rate focuses would mean the structure would corrupt after some time, some portion of Benjamin s beginning origination. In its initial barely any long stretches of presence the pinnacle was hit with overwhelming rainstorms. You can see the distinction, yet its held up entirely well, says Clark. It can likewise withstand 65-mph wind blasts (the historical center will simply close the patio on the off chance that they understand that high) just as the heaviness of a couple of additional bodies. Weve seen individuals climb itnot advisablebut its a hearty structure. In spite of the fact that the mushroom block may have its applicationsas protection, or as the mass of a pavilionthe objective of the Hy-Fi venture was to show the world that options in contrast to the customary are accessible with the use of a little creative mind. As basic specialists we will in general be approached to structure things that need to keep going for a long time and everywhere scales, says Clark. While the mushroom block isn't straightforwardly relevant to that, its changed the manner in which we consider materials as a rule. Its likewise striking from a designing front: You can at present form with a material multiple times less firm than brick work. You dont need to promptly excuse it since its delicate and floppy. Michael Abrams is a free essayist. For Further Discussion As auxiliary architects we will in general be approached to plan things that need to keep going for a long time and everywhere scales.Matthew Clark, basic designer, Arup

It lets you showcase yourself in multiple dimensions, to paint a picture of yourself as a whole person, instead of just the typical resumeâs collection of dates and buzzwords. This LinkedIn Profile guide will give you the information you need to create the perfect LinkedIn profile to make an outstanding first impression with recruit ers and potential employers â" while also helping you build your professional brand and expand your professional network in general.Setting Up Your LinkedIn Profile for Maximum ResultsIf youâre not active on LinkedIn (or if you just havenât gotten around to optimizing, expanding, or updating your profile in a whileor ever), it can be difficult to know where to start in your efforts to turn your basic profile into an opportunity magnet. This guide will walk you through the key elements of an effective LinkedIn profile and best practices for getting noticed. Future posts will cover more advanced techniques. One note to keep in mind: Details are critical. It is important to pay attention to the little things, such as spelling and grammar, throughout your profile. Ive seen great profiles undermined by typos and minor errors.Part 1: Your Basic LinkedIn ProfileNote: To punch up any of these elements of your LinkedIn profile, simply select Edit Profile and the Edit icon for the approp riate section.Whatâs in a Name? When it comes to your name, itâs best to keep it plain and simple. More importantly, it makes it easier for potential employers to find your profile.Resist the temptation to include things like Killer Video Game Programmer or Tax Shredding CPA. Stick to the basics â" first and last name. For SEO purposes, you can highlight your skills and experiences in your âAboutâ section.Headline Design for SuccessYour headline is one of the most important portions of your LinkedIn profile. Not only is it an excellent place to include critical career-minded keywords, but it will show up frequently throughout key LinkedIn locations such as:Search ResultsConnection InvitationsEmployee ListingsCompany PagesMessagesThis is the place where you can use some superlatives and creative wordsmithing in order to attract attention. You want to keep it professional, but this is an important opportunity to make yourself memorable. Donât squander it.At its heart and so ul, LinkedIn is another search engine. Whatever you choose to make your headline say, make it something searchable that will help people who are looking for the services you provide or the particular skill set you to bring to the table find you.Just take a look at the keyword laden, yet memorable LinkedIn headline for John Paul Engel. Helpful Hint: Have you won any professional awards? Thereâs no harm in the headline Award Winning Graphic Designer or something similar as long as you have won at least one verifiable award in your profession. The Right Picture is Worth a Thousand WordsYour photograph is a visual representation of who you are to the world of LinkedIn. Donât go with a grainy ten-year-old summer vacation photograph. Your best bet is to use a professional-looking headshot. Depending on your profession and your intended audience, you can also opt for something more approachable and casual (but still professional).According to Business Insider, people remember fac es better than they remember names â" thatâs why headshots are preferable.A professional photo also helps to verify that you are who you say you are. It builds credibility and trust with the recruiter. URL CustomizationOn the upper right of your profile, just under the toolbar, will be an option that says, âEdit public profile and URL.âIf you click on this, you will be taken to a page that will enable you to edit your URL.Customizing your LinkedIn URL makes it easier for people to find you by searching for your name. Otherwise, theyâre left sifting through the hundreds of LinkedIn visitors who have names similar to yours when looking for you. Most users have some combination of name and several numbers as a default URL. You want to shorten that to your first and last name if possible. If your ideal custom url is already taken, look for a memorable combination of initials and last name, throw in your middle name, or otherwise get creative so that people will be able to find y ou easily. Why is this step important?Aside from making you easier to find by people who are looking for you, this also allows you to develop continuity between social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and even your blog â" assuming you have one. These are all places prospective employers are likely to visit trying to learn a little more about the person behind the profile.Make Your Summary the Focal Point of Your ProfileJust like the summary on the resume, the summary on your LinkedIn profile really gives users like you an opportunity to shine. This is your space to differentiate yourself from all the other computer programmers, accountants, marketers, and other professionals in the job market today. You want to highlight your strongest skills and most impressive accomplishments in 4 or so sentences.Think of this as your elevator pitch; create a snap-shot of your professional âgreatest hitsâ and put them together succinctly. You really want to avoid generic la nguage like, âexperienced in Marketing.âInstead, you could say: âIncreased ROI of social media campaigns by 15%.âGive hard, quantifiable evidence of your skills and abilities whenever possible.LinkedIn also allows you to add videos, links, images, and documents to this section so employers can see some of your finest work at a glance. Utilize this capability!Refresh and revise your summary section regularly. You always want your information to be accurate and up to date.Helpful Hint: You can use your LinkedIn profile as a portfolio as well as a digital resume by taking full advantage of the ability to upload photos, videos, links, and documents. Photojournalists may want to include their favorite shots, bakers can feature photos of wedding cakes or cupcakes that have earned accolades from satisfied customers, etc.Donât fill this section with tired, boring details. Make it come alive with real-world evidence of your contribution to your industry. You can use any of the f ollowing tools to do that.VideoImagesAudioPresentationsSlide ShowsDocumentsAnd MoreYour Experience, Skills, and Expertise are More Than the Sum of Their PartsResist the temptation to cut and paste your resume into the experience column of your LinkedIn profile. Try to use words in this section to paint a revealing portrait of the skills and talents you possess. This section is much more than a description of previous jobs. Keep this section of your profile easy for readers to scan quickly, but also make an effort to showcase your accomplishments, talents, and accolades in a compelling manner.LinkedIn also allows you to bring your descriptions to life with images, videos, recommendations, and other compelling extras.LinkedIn Experience Section ExampleHugo Pereira is a Brussels-based marketing professional who successfully used LinkedIn to fast-track his last two job searches. See below for the job description of a previous role that helped him land his current gig. Note the focus on accomplishments (not just job duties) and the embedded recommendations and visual examples of his past work. Remember: Your primary goal is to be found by employers and HR personnel interested in people with your unique experience and talent. Use the words theyâll be looking for when describing your industry experience.Part 2: Your LinkedIn ConnectionsThe next important aspect of your LinkedIn profile is connecting to the people you know and the people you want to know.LinkedIn Connections â" How Does Your Network Grow?Connections are a huge part of what makes LinkedIn such a force and invaluable tool for good to people searching for jobs. Why are connections so critical on LinkedIn?Itâs not just the first-level connections that are critical. Itâs the additional connections you can make because of those people who know you and (hopefully) love you.Your primary connections serve as introductions to the people they know â" to people and opportunities around the world and across industries.Of course, there are some potential employers, such as John Paul Engel, quoted below, who look for those vital connections as a sign of credibility.Sidebar: The Recruiters PerspectiveJohn Paul Engel is the president of a recruiting firm that serves high-growth companies in cable, payments, and professional and financial services. He kindly shared his thoughts on what gets his attention (positively and negatively) when hes scouting for talent on LinkedIn.Turn-ons:Keywords related to the job. (In particular, listing software names (e.g. Omniture, Tableau) makes it easier to find your profile for related positions)Measurable accomplishments. (Give me dollar estimates and/or other hard numbers!)Well-written copyComplete profiles (Fill out the details under education and job entries.)Key accomplishments that make you stand outLots of connections particularly if we share someGreat recommendations from executivesTurn-offs:Goofy picture (You posing in your muscle shirt next to Donald Duck)Weird jobs or job descriptions (Chairman of the Chocolate Factory, CEO of the Smith Family)Key information missingSingle-digit connection listRecommendations only from very junior-level connectionsLinkedIn GroupsBelieve it or not, groups are one of the most important things going on LinkedIn these days. Katherine Long of Illustria Designs says she often sifts through industry-related groups in search of potential talent.Itâs not enough to simply be listed as a group member, however. That wonât make you stand out. You need to be an active participant in groups in order to stand out as a leader in your industry. Active involvement in groups helps you make new primary connections, which, in turn, grows your exposure to people who are looking for employees with your skillset.Thereâs the added benefit that some people in these groups may be looking for someone just like you as a coworker, employee, or collaborator on a project that will increase your exposure even m ore.Striking Out on Your OwnWhile participating in groups is a great way to branch out and make new connections in your industry or related industries, starting your own group brings a deeper sense of gravitas to the situation.Mashable highly recommends starting your own group as one of the most powerful tools you can use to solidify your brand in the business or as a strong job candidate in your industry. Donât begin a group for your business or industry in general though. Find a specific area of your industry and establish yourself as the employee businesses want to have. Present yourself as an expert in that little niche. The benefits of starting your own group are wide and varied and include all the following â" and more.Establishes you as an industry leader.Displays leadership capabilities.Shows businesses you know your stuff.Gives you a slight edge over competitors for the same job who have lower-profile presences on LinkedIn.Generates a personal mailing list for you.Facil itates connections that would not otherwise have been possible.Makes you an attractive commodity for employers interested in your knowledge (or insuring their competitors do not gain access to it).Once youâve gotten the basics of groups, group participation, and group leadership down, itâs time to move on to something many LinkedIn users struggle with in building their LinkedIn presenceâ"recommendations and endorsements.Recommendations and EndorsementsBoth recommendations and endorsements can strengthen your LinkedIn presence by offering third-party validation of your experience and strengths. This is another way in which a LinkedIn profile can offer much more than a resume can.1. LinkedIn EndorsementsLinkedIn allows connected users to endorse each other for certain skills. Endorsements are different from recommendations, and generally not quite as impressive because users are simply checking a box and arent actually providing any details. Its easy to endorse somebody, so its no t quite the same as someone taking the time to sing your praises in detail (see Recommendations below). Endorsements are, however, testaments to your abilities in certain fields and welcome additions to your LinkedIn profile, particularly for job seekers.Endorsements show up in your profile like this.Notice that you can only display your top 3 endorsements at any given time. You can add more Skills to be endorsed by clicking âAdd a New Skillâ to the right of your skills list.In the window that opens, you can not only add more skills but also select which of your skills you want to be displayed in your top 3.The other skills youâve listed beyond your top 3 are still viewable. Simply click, âShow Moreâ and your entire list will appear.Keep in mind that only your top 3 skills will appear when setting up your profile. You want to make sure that your best, most relevant, and highly endorsed skills are viewable first.2. LinkedIn RecommendationsA recommendation, on the other hand , is a written statement of recommendation from one of your LinkedIn connections. A positive recommendation will add significantly more credibility than an endorsement because someone took the time to provide details about your strengths and accomplishments and sign their name.Recommendations from former managers and higher-level colleagues/clients tend to carry the most weight with hiring managers and recruiters. However, any positive recommendation can add significant depth and reliability to your profile. You ask for a recommendation on LinkedIn in the same way you ask for a recommendation in real life personally and respectfully. Start with people who know you and love you in real life right now and then expand out to reconnect with fans from your past. Write a recommendation for someone you respect and that person is likely to want to return the favor (assuming he or she knows you well enough and has a positive perception of you). Our next post in this series will provide mor e detailed tips on how to ask for and receive fantastic LinkedIn recommendations.LinkedIn MistakesAvoid a Few by Remembering These Helpful PointsMistakes are made daily when creating LinkedIn profiles. These three big mistakes can sabotage your efforts to make the most of LinkedIn as a job search tool.1. Failing to Adjust Your Privacy SettingsIn a job search situation, you want the world to be able to find you. People with open positions are actively looking for candidates on LinkedIn, but you have to be visible to get any action.Donât make the mistake of turning on privacy settings so that your connections arent able to find and view your profile. Make it available far and wide to get more mileage from your job search efforts. You can edit your privacy settings in the same area as you customize your URLto the right under the toolbar. It will look like this:2. Inconsistent or Infrequent UpdatesIf youâre actively searching for a new job, you need to be actively updating your Linked In profile.People are busy and it helps to jog their memory about you and your brilliance. Share an article, add to your portfolio, spruce up your summary. While you do not have to provide hourly updates, you do need to share status updates, and you need to share often.Tatiana Mulry is a mobile marketing consultant and speaker who often finds new clients and opportunities via LinkedIn. She attributes this success primarily to staying active. I make frequent posts of content related to my specialty into the newsfeed and people say, I always think of you when I see you posting articles.3. Neglecting to Personalize Connection RequestsDonât go for the LinkedIn default message when youâre attempting to make connections. While Im sure you are a memorable person, sometimes people need a little prompting to remember how they know you. This is particularly true if youve only met the person briefly or if its been a while since you were in touch.Take a few minutes to draft a personalized m essage with your request. Briefly remind your connection of how you know each other and express your interest in staying in touch. In SummaryYour LinkedIn strategy can make or break your job search effort. If you apply the tips in this LinkedIn profile guide, youâll see for yourself not only the kind of wow factor they bring to your profile, but how your LinkedIn profile can help recruiters and employers more easily find you â" and, more importantly, be impressed.Next Up: This guide covered some of the core areas of the LinkedIn profile. Professionals Investment funds for the organization on buying and supplanting innovation No expectation to absorb information for representatives Potential improvement of representative resolve More modern tech because of individual overhauls Cons Progressively unpredictable IT support for different gadgets and working frameworks Higher security dangers Potential loss of representative and friends security A few workers might not have their own gadgets Experts of a BYOD Policy Reserve funds: With a BYOD approach, you wont need to purchase telephones and PCs for each worker. A few representatives might not have their own gadgets, however an ongoing Pew Research study found that 77 percent of American grown-ups effectively own a cell phone, and 92 percent of individuals ages 18 to 29 years of age own one. Also, workers are increasingly well-suited to care more for their hardware since it really has a place with them. For the most part, workers realize that on the off chance that they lose or break their organization telephone, its an agony, however the organization will give another one. On the off chance that they lose or break their own telephone, it will in general be an a lot greater arrangement. Convenience: Employees can stick one telephone in their pockets and dont need to stress over dealing with two gadgets. Preference: If John likes iPhones and Jane likes Androids, both can joyfully utilize their favored framework. They dont need to learn new frameworks. Regularly, if your organization pays to introduce Microsoft Office or Photoshop or whatever product the representative requirements for take a shot at a representatives individual PC, the worker is glad to have the product for individual work too. Productivity: Employees have no expectation to learn and adapt for new hardware since they as of now see how to utilize their own electronic gadgets. They can bounce in on the very beginning for sure fire profitability. Exceptional tech: Its a colossal cost for any organization to refresh hardware, yet workers are frequently increasingly propelled to pay to supplant their own telephone or PC with the most recent accessible gadget. Cons of a BYOD Policy Complex IT support: If each representative has a standard issue PC, tablet, and telephone, its simpler for the IT office to help and fix the gadgets. In the event that everybody has their own gadget, it can turn out to be significantly more unpredictable to keep the hardware working. In the event that you have to introduce custom programming, will it take a shot at everyones gadgets? Imagine a scenario in which Jane isnt ready to refresh her PC. Imagine a scenario in which John needs to run Linux while every other person is running Windows. Higher security dangers: What sort of information does your association produce and use? Its simple to make controls about how workers should utilize organization gadgets, yet its not exactly so natural to tell your representatives that they cannot let their 13-year-old compose a school paper on their own PC. What are you going to do to ensure that your organization data is kept secure? Likewise, when representatives leave the organization, youll need to expel any secret data from any worker gadget. In any case, you dont need to erase their own data. Nobody is glad on the off chance that you state, IT needs to wipe the entirety of your photographs and records from the PC to ensure that you dont take any private data. Potential loss of protection: Youll need to decide how youll secure your companys private data before a representative consents to utilize his hardware for work. Ensure that you state unmistakably, from the earliest starting point, what you will do with characterized data on the gadget or youll have issues when a worker leaves. In the event that Jane is a salesman who utilizes her own telephone number for work purposes when she stops and moves to your rival, every last bit of her customers despite everything have her telephone number in their records. At the point when they call, shell answer, and Jane will have an a lot simpler time to move those customers to her new company. Even if Jane consented to a non-contend arrangement, if the clients arrive at Jane, you cant legitimately stop them. For whatever length of time that Jane isnt seeking after the clients, shes free. Decisions About BYOD Policies A BYOD arrangement may function admirably for littler organizations. Be that as it may, its insightful not to settle on the choice dependent on the comfort and cost factors. Consider how a BYOD approach will affect your business and consider what your workers need. Look to the future and settle on choices about how to deal with the gadgets when a representative leaves your association. The Perils of Owning a Side Business
The Perils of Owning a Side Business A few weeks ago I wrote a post advising you to get a side business. I have always loved this advice when I read it in magazines, the newest version of it says that high school and college kids should get an eBay business. What a great way to learn about business fulfillment, customer service, pricing, promotion, vendor relations, income potential, risk the list goes on and on! After that post I got a comment from someone who warned about jumping in and starting your own gig. I certainly dont want to give a false impression that its all roses, and it isnt a tactic for everyone. I love the idea because I dont want to depend on one employer for my income, especially since I tend to live paycheck to paycheck. Its hard, and most business fail early on. Whether its a multilevel company, selling homemade doggy biscuits or a service company, there isnt much thats easy about getting it up and sustainable. But imagine what could happen if you could supplement your income by a few hundred, or a thousand, bucks each month. Last night I chatted with a buddy who is a social/clinical worker who has a side gig where he works one night a week and pulls in about $1,000 a month. Nice supplement. It takes time from his family and energy and effort to do the job right. I know that many of you have skills or talents that you could sell to others what are they? Bookkeeping? Web design? Ghost writing? Jewelery making or dog walking? These are all things that can cushion your not-so-stable income. Ok, enough of my rambling check out the perils that Ben Yoskovitz lays out on his post Exposed: The Pros and Cons of Freelancing. Note the awesome discussion in the comments area what do you think? Are you ready to hang your shingle and start your side business? The Perils of Owning a Side Business A few weeks ago I wrote a post advising you to get a side business. The Many Ways Improving Your Style Can Change Your Life
The Many Ways Improving Your Style Can Change Your Life How much time do you really spend thinking about the way you dress and style yourself? Some people do it for hours each week, while other people prefer to do the minimum it takes to groom themselves and look presentable. You might think that its a waste of time to spend too much time thinking about and working on your appearance. But there are lots of benefits to putting a bit more effort into being fashionable and stylish. It can change how you feel about yourself and improve your life, even helping you to boost your career. Before you dismiss the idea of focusing on how you dress and style yourself, consider all of these ways it could help to make your life better. Feel More Confident Spending time on how you look and dress can be a great way to help you feel more confident. You might imagine that thinking too much about how you look will have the opposite effect. While its true that regarding your appearance in a negative way wont help you to be more confident, taking a positive approach to style and fashion can. You can focus on what you like and what you think makes you look good, as well as feel good. Dressing up to look good can help you to feel better on the inside too. Whether youre putting on a powerful suit for a business meeting or choosing some bright colors for a dreary day, it can perk you up and give you the confidence you need. Discover More About Yourself Thinking more about your personal style is a great way to discover more about your personality and who you are. Of course, looks arent everything, but many people express themselves through the way they dress, style their hair, or do their makeup. The way you present yourself can tell people about who you are, including you. You might currently be unsure about how you want people to see you or even feel a bit uncertain about what sort of things you like and dont like. Exploring fashion and style, and perhaps trying out some different looks, can help you to find out who you are and how you feel most comfortable and confident. Care More About Yourself Considering how you look more can also lead to you caring more about yourself. While you dont want to overthink how you look, some people dont think about it enough or only do so negatively. You might only perform the most essential tasks to make yourself presentable before you leave the house each day. But paying a bit more attention to yourself can help you feel that you deserve to spend time on your appearance. As well as boosting your confidence, it can also help to raise your self-esteem. Stand Out More Not everyone wants to stand out. If youre happy being part of the crowd, you might not think about how your fashion choices could get you noticed. But there are any occasions when you might want to be more noticeable, both in your private and work life. People in certain professions might want to stand out more because theyre competing against a lot of other people with individual styles. For example, musicians might want to give a lot of thought to the way they dress. There could be a number of reasons you might want to stand out from the crowd, whether its for professional purposes or related to your social life. If you dont want to blend into the background, changing the way you dress could change that. Change Your Image at Work The professional sphere is one of the areas where the way you dress can make a huge difference. How you choose to style yourself at work can affect how you feel when youre working, as well as how people regard you in a professional capacity. Many people have to follow a dress code at work, whether its explicitly written or an unspoken rule. But even if you have to follow a dress code, you can make choices within it. You can think about how your choices for your work clothes could make you appear and what other people might think of you. Some outfits might look sterner and make you feel more in control. Others might have a touch of fun about them, so you come across as friendly and approachable. Giving extra consideration to your outfits at work could give you a professional edge. Connect with Others Over Style and Fashion Having interests you can share with others is always a good way to connect with people and to make friends. You dont have to be fashion-obsessed to talk to others about fashion and style. Even a passing interest can give you a way to connect to people and talk about something you have in common. Plus, you can socialize with people both online and offline about the fashion that you enjoy. For example, you can connect with readers in the comments section of a fashion blog or even start your own blog. You can also talk to people in person, of course. In fact, its fashion is often a good thing to talk about if youre trying to make small talk. Complimenting someone on their fashion choices can get a conversation going. Be Ready for Opportunities to Come Along Improving your fashion choices could have some surprising benefits. When youre going about your life, you never know who you might run into or what opportunities could come along. Being dressed in a certain way could open doors for you in ways that you might not have imagined. Wearing the right outfit could be the difference between making an impression on someone important you have bumped into or having them barely notice you. It could get you an invitation to an event or just make sure you dont need to go home and change if you unexpectedly need to be somewhere. Learning from Mistakes If you decide youre going to work on your fashion sense, its almost inevitable that youre going to make mistakes. If you dont, you might be playing things too safe. But like anything in life, any mistakes you make with your fashion choices will give you an excellent opportunity to learn. It might seem like theyre just clothes, but the lessons you learn can apply to your life in a broader way too. Fashion mishaps can teach you more about who you are and what you can get away with style-wise, as well as how other people react to certain looks. Become a More Ethically Conscious Person Becoming more interested in fashion can have some interesting effects. One thing you might do is start researching the clothes you buy more. This can cause you to think more about where your clothes come from and who makes them. It can prompt you to try and be a more ethical consumer and live a more sustainable lifestyle. You can look for fashion labels that use more ethical labor than others or perhaps that use materials that are kinder to the environment. Or you might make more of an effort to buy second-hand clothes instead of buying new ones. Pay More Attention to Your Finances Thinking more about fashion can also make you look at your finances differently. Clothes can be cheap or costly, but there are various factors to take into account when you think about how much to spend on them. For example, a cheap item of clothing might only last you a few months before you need to replace it. Whereas, a more expensive item could last for years if you look after it. You also need to consider how often you will wear something. Is there any point buying an expensive dress if you only wear it once? You can apply these same considerations to other things you spend money on, from cars to furniture. Start a New Hobby or Even Career Taking more of an interest in fashion and style could lead you to new interests in your personal life or even in your career. If you begin with choosing clothes and accessories you love and following trends, you might soon want to start making your own things. You could alter your clothes or start sewing them from scratch. Or you might just enjoy spending time at fashion fairs and events. Perhaps you will even consider making fashion or something connected to it part of your career. There are lots of ways you could get involved with the fashion industry by beginning a new career or even using your current skills and experience. Theres more to the industry than just the creative side of it. Your interest in fashion could help you if you wanted to work in sales, PR, distribution, and many other areas of business. Giving more thought to fashion and style can have a surprising number of potential benefits for you. It can affect how you feel and have practical advantages in various areas of your life too.

Guest Post Starting Over From Scratch 5 Things to Keep In Mind during Your Career Transition
Guest Post Starting Over From Scratch 5 Things to Keep In Mind during Your Career Transition After a layoff, a firing, a mid-life change of heart, the discovery of a new talent, or exposure to a new and irresistible opportunity, youâve decided that itâs time to switch careers and start your professional life over againâ¦from the very beginning. Youâre going back to square one, and you know this is the right move for you. But you also know that youâre going to encounter some challenges along the way. And some of these challenges may be daunting enough to make you question your decision. Here are a few ways to stay motivated and on track as you face the courageous choices ahead of you. Keep your perspective. So youâre making a leap from one career path to anotherâ" business to healthcare, for example, or sales to law. But this isnât a life or death matter. Your new direction may bring you perfect happiness, or perfect misery, or (most likely) something in between. But no matter what, you can always transition back or make another decision altogether. Youâre in control, and no career decision amounts to a life sentence. Thereâs no need to overthink or overestimate the stakes. Be patient. Itâs been years since youâve entered a classroom and faced challenges like essays and final exams. Your professor may be decades younger than you, and the students around you may struggle with the simplest concepts. At the same time, they may easily grasp complex material that boggles your mind and makes you want to give up in despair. In either case, be patientâ"with yourself and with others around you. Everyoneâs journey is different. Respect theirs and respect your own. Thereâs no need to become besties with the 20-year-olds who suddenly surround you at school or in your entry-level position. And thereâs also no need to hustle out the door after class or after work assuming you have nothing in common with them and not bothering to find out. Accept that youâre an adult, and the people around you are kids, but that doesnât mean you canât connect or that you donât belong among them. Just relax and be yourself. Youâre better at learning new material than you used to be. Thatâs the whole point of wisdom and experienceâ"it makes us smarter. So use those grown-up smarts to your advantage, and make the connections between information and experience that were unavailable you years ago when you first entered the workforce. When you have a question, ask. When you have something to share or explain, do so. Donât limit yourself. You can do this. What youâre doing may feel completely novel, and you may see only a handful of people around you (or none at all) who are starting over in mid-life the way you are. But this is an illusionâ"thousands of others have come this way before you, and youâre by new means the first to blaze this trail. Even more important: if this is the best path to your next step, then itâs the best path. The only way to put these challenges behind you is to keep moving. Tackle one step and one day at a time. Before long, youâll be using what you learned in your previous career to handle your new responsibilities like a pro.
